Mixed doubles tournaments are the staple in house 'fun' competition for every club in the country. And they are a bore ,thats why so few people wan't to enter . Low grade tennis with the weakest members in the club trapped in the man plus lady format regardless of ability. With a cup of tea and 1950's raspberry sponge cake to eat after 3 hours of mind numbing tennis.Any junior or vaguely competitive player will run a mile to escape this.
Well some people like them so why not? It's all about choice. Our tournaments are a lot of laughs, but not good tennis, however there are serious games for those that want them. At our next one, someone is bringing a bottle of Pimms, sounds good to me!
The Pimms is a good idea ,that will help. But if I stay sober and face the reality what is the choice? I am not good enough to get into the few team slots available for organised league matches, and the club tournament is once a year when I lose in the first round. So a year of club nights, mixed ability mixed tennis stretches out for ever infront of me. Then I top it off with the same thing for a tournament.
I hope you're not a dissatisfied member of my club, in which case get in touch. Otherwise all I can suggest is get hold of some coaching, it's never too late to improve; offer to captain a new team at your club if there are similar people around or perhaps you need to look for another club if your current one is not meeting your needs.
